肩書きの略称メモ / 2006-11-13 (月)

この記事は最初ワールドカップ頃に書きあげようと思っていたものですが、大幅に遅れ、暫時書き足してやっとここまで来たものです。下記リストの完全性も確かなものではないのでメモとします。あくまで参考程度にして下さい。いずれ書き足すときも来るかと思います。

英国人の訃報記事などを見ていると、様々な肩書きの略称が出てきます。たとえば、KGはKnight of the Garter （ガーター騎士）、JPがJustice of Peace (治安判事)の略です。こういった肩書きの略称を英語では大抵Letters after the NameとかPost Nominal Letters（略してLetters）と呼びます。そのまま、ですね。

実は、このLettersは書く順番が決まっています。だいたい大まかにその種類によって順番が決まり、そのカテゴリーの中でもだいたいの順位があります。ここではそのことを少し解説します。

  • Bt(baronet;准男爵)もしくはEsq(Esquire;エスクワイア)がある場合、まず最初に名前のすぐあとに置きます。

  1. 英国君主によって叙された栄典（勲章等）

    下のリスト中の記号について：

    • #：Blackには記載があるがDebrett'sには無いもの
    • *：Debrett'sにはあるが、Blackには無いもの

    Debrett'sに無いものは、おそらく現有者がいない関係で省いているのではないかと思います。

  4. 修道会

    キリスト教の修道会に属している人はその略称が付される。ただし、イエズス会（Society of Jesus）の場合SJが付されるが、ベネディクト会の場合OSBを使わない人がいるなど、各修道会によっていろいろ用い方がある。'Dom'や'Dame'を用いると十分と考えられている（Debrett's, 91）。

  5. 医学資格（大学の学位以外）

    以下詳細は省略します。

  6. 学会フェロー（FRS, FSA, FRSE, FRSL, FBA）

  7. 王立芸術院 Royal Academy of Arts, Royal Scottish Academy

    PRA, PPRA, PRSA, PPRSA, RA, RSA, ARA, ARASA

  8. 職能団体フェロー、メンバー

    たとえば、35団体からなるEngineering Councilの公認技術者«chartered engineer»: CEngプラス所属する団体の略号をメンバーシップにあわせて書く。

  9. Writers to the Signet

    元々スコットランドの玉爾に携わった人達だが、今ではスコットランドの事務弁護士«solicitor»を指す。ここではその私設団体であるThe Society of Writers to Her Majesty’s Signetのメンバー。略称WS

  10. 議会議員(MP)および他の職 MLA, MLC CC
  11. 所属の軍隊(RN, RAF, RM)

さて、ここで注意すべき点です。

  1. 勲章で下位のものを持っている人が同じ勲章の上位のものをもらった場合、上位のものだけ記します。ただし、異なる勲章をもらった場合併記します。

  2. こういう略称はかなりフォーマルな記述法であり、出席者リスト等でしか用いられません。名刺にも用いません。したがって、口語では用いませんし、手紙の書き出しでも用いません。

    したがって: Dear Sir Anthony Acland, KGといったような書き方はしません。
