殿下の記事を受けて「英国における」高位聖職者の敬称・呼称を簡単にメモします。

イングランド国教会/アングリカン・コミュニオン

イングランドでは所謂英国国教会«The Church of England»が国教ですが、実は現代では訳としてイングランド国教会という方がどちらかと言えば正確で（というよりややこしくない）、現代ではイングランド国教会はイングランドのみに権限があります。その他の地域の国教会系はカンタベリー大主教をリーダー的に仰いでいますが、基本的に独立した権限があり、カンタベリーの意のままにはなりません。この緩やかな連合自体の事をアングリカン・コミュニオンといいます。

英国には、イングランド国教会«the Church of England»、アイルランド教会«The Church of Ireland»、ウェイルズ教会«The Church in Wales»、スコットランド教会«The Church of Scotland»がありますが、国教なのはイングランドだけで、他はそれぞれ、1869年、1920年、1920年に非国教化されました。

このうち長老制のスコットランド協会は制度が違いすぎるのでここでは省き、他の3教会の高位聖職者について書くことにします。

カンタベリー/ヨーク大主教 - Archibishop of Canterbury/York

ぞれぞれ、Primate of All England and MetropolitanとPrimate of England and Metropolitanという地位の違いはあれど、敬称･呼称は同じです。

1. The Most Reverend and Right Honourable the Lord Archbishop of Canterbury/York
2. Your Grace / Archbishop
3. The Archbishop (of Canterbury/York)

ロンドン主教

ロンドンの主教は枢密院議員だそうですので、それに沿った敬称･呼称となります。

1. The Right Reverend and Right Honourable the Lord Bishop of London
2. Bishop
3. The Bishop (of London)

アイルランド教会およびその他のアングリカン・コミュニオンの大主教

アイルランド教会にはアーマー大主教(Primate of all Ireland)とダブリン大主教(Primate of Ireland)がいます。おそらくウェイルズ教会のウェイルズ大主教も同じ敬称のはずです。

1. The Most Reverend the Lord Archbishop of Armagh/Dublin/Wales etc...
2. Your Grace / Archbishop
3. The Archbishop of Armagh/Dublin/Wales etc...

ただし、Titles and Forms of Address. 12th ed. (London: Black, 1997)ではアルマー大主教についてはPrimate of all Irelandなので、その宛書は：

• The Most Reverend His Grace the Lord Primate of All Ireland

とすることが書いてあります(82)。Debrett'sの方に書いていない事を見ると、後者で書く場合もある、という程度かもしれませんが。

主教 - Bishop

イングランド国教会、ウェイルズ教会、およびアイルランド教会（ミース主教以外）の主教は以下のようになります。

1. The Right Reverend (the Lord) Bishop of 主教区
2. Bishop
3. The Bishop (of 主教区)

アイルランドのミース主教«Bishop of Meath»はPremier Bishop of Church of Irelandなので上記のThe Right ReverendのかわりにThe Most Reverendを用います (Debrett's, 223)。

ローマ・カトリックの高位聖職者

まず注意しなければならないのは、連合王国ではローマ・カトリックの大司教･司教などの場合、「何処何処大司教」の「何処何処」といった地名をつける方式は公的に且つ法的に認められたものではありません。

したがって、公式な文書や法的な文書では用いられません。以下では英国での公式文書で用いられているものを「公式」として記します。

もっとも、これは英国における公式な場における話で、カトリックのコミュニティや個人的なやり取りの場合には関係ありません。

教皇 The Pope

1. His Holiness the Pope
2. Your Holiness
3. His Holiness / The Pope

枢機卿 Cardinal

1. • 大司教の場合: His Eminence the Cardinal Archbishop of 大司教区名
   • 司教の場合： His Eminence the Cardinal Bishop of 司教区名
   • 大司教・司教ではない場合：His Eminence Cardinal 姓
   • [公式]： His Eminence Cardinal 姓
2. Your Eminence / Cardinal (姓)
3. His Eminence / Cardinal (姓)

大司教 - Archbishop

1. • His Grace Archbishop of 大司教区
   • [公式]： The Most Reverend Archbishop 姓
2. Your Grace / Archbishop
3. His Grace / The Archbishop (of 大司教区)

Black版によると、宛書には：

• The Most Reverend 名＋姓 Archbishop of 大司教区

という表現も載っています。また、それを受けてカトリックのアーマー大司教およびダブリン大司教の宛書を：

• The Most Reverend 名＋姓 Archbishop of Armagh and Primate of All Ireland
• The Most Reverend 名＋姓 Archbishop of Dublin and Primate of Ireland

と称する方式も紹介しています(100)。

司教 - Bishop

カトリックの場合司教も同じく公式には司教区名をつけません。もし仮に司教区をつける場合、同名の主教区がアングリカンにあれば、'Roman Catholic Bishop of PN'とすべきだそうです (Debrett's, 243)。

1. • His Lordship the Bishop of 司教区 もしくは The Right Reverend 名+姓, Bishop of 司教区
   • [公式]： The Right Reverend Bishop 姓
2. My Lord (Bishop) / Bishop
3. His Lordship / The Bishop

アイルランドの司教の場合、上記のThe Right ReverendのかわりにThe Most Reverendを用います。また、博士号を持つ人の場合、The Most Reverendと名＋姓の間に'Dr'を入れるようです(Debrett's, 244)。
